Siem Reap to Koh Rong

Many travelers like yourself like to spend their vacations going from one destination to the next, instead of staying in one place for a week or two. Therefore, it is quite common for people to decide to start in one destination and then see three or four more before they return home from their trip.

One of the more popular trips that people seem to be making includes going from Siem Reap to Koh Rong, as there is so much to see and do in both areas. When you plan a trip like that though, you will need to be prepared to make at least one additional stop, because you cannot travel directly from Siem Reap to Koh Rong. Instead, you will need to travel from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville and then go from there over to Koh Rong.

You have a couple options when you go from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, but the most popular one is flying. It doesn’t take long to board a plane, take off, and then land in your destination. However, that can be the most expensive option, which is not helpful if you are trying to stick to your budget while traveling.

If you do not want to fly, you can always take the bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and then another bus from there to Sihanoukville. You will find yourself on the first bus for quite some time, approximately seven to eight hours, to be exact. It is usually best to take this bus ride late at night, so that you can sleep the hours away and be well rested when you arrive in Phnom Penh in the morning.

Don’t worry, the overnight buses are quite comfortable, as they are air conditioned. You also have access to free water, free Wi-Fi, and access to a comfort room, which is complete with bunk beds and pillows in case you cannot sleep sitting upright in your seat. It is recommended that you wake up around five in the morning, so that you can watch the sun rise out the windows of the bus, as there is nothing more beautiful at that hour of the day.

The second bus ride is not much shorter, as it takes the same amount of time to reach Sihanoukville from Phnom Penh. This bus will not be as comfortable as the first one that you rode, which is why many travelers like yourself will do the journey this way once, and then they will fly from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville in the future.

There are more bus companies offering direct routes from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, so it is possible that you can ride just one bus to reach your destination. Of course, if you can’t find this option for your travel dates, do not give up, because it will definitely be something that will be available more in the future.

You may even want to consider hiring a taxi for your trip from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, but it is recommended that you book one in advance. This will ensure that you have an excellent driver who can navigate the heavy Cambodian traffic.

speed boat koh rong

As soon as you reach Sihanoukville, you will need to purchase a ticket for a boat ride over to the island. This ride is not as long as the bus rides that you will have endured to reach your destinations, however, you may feel that it is much longer due to the potential choppy waters. The length of time that it takes to go from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong via boat is dependent on the method that you choose to travel. A speed boat will only take approximately forty-five minutes, although it will be longer if you are not getting off at the first stop.

There are slower boats available as well, and while they are cheaper, it will take you anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours to reach your destination on Koh Rong.

All the boats and ferries leave from the Ochheuteal Pier, which is in Sihanoukville, and they travel to the main tourist beach area on Koh Rong, which happens to be Koh Touch. When it is time for you to leave, you can catch the same boat, or a similar one, at the same pier that you arrived at. Some boats also make stops at some of the growing tourist areas on the island, but the stops there will be after the main one. That means that you will be on the boat longer, but at least you will not need to hire a private boat to take you to where you want to go.

You should make sure that the boat that you want to ride will take you to your destination prior to purchasing your ticket. Failure to do this can and most likely will cost you more money and time in the long-term. The reason for this is you may think that your ticket is good for any of the piers, and yet you may find out that it is only good for the main pier on the island. If that happens to you, you may find yourself stranded far away from your destination and in need of hiring a private boat to get you to where you need to be.

While it is possible to purchase tickets for the ferries when you arrive in Sihanoukville, it is highly recommended that you purchase them well in advance. This will ensure that you have a spot on the boat and do not need to delay your arrival date due to the boats being sold out.

It can be quite difficult to plan the length of the trip from Siem Reap to Koh Rong and purchase tickets for the bus and the ferries for the appropriate times. After all, delays happen all the time with travel! However, if you leave a few hours in between your arrival and next departure, you should find yourself boarding your next mode of transportation easily. And before you know it, you will be relaxing on the glorious beaches of Koh Rong!
