Is Koh Rong Safe for Travelers?

Is Koh Rong Safe

Every time a traveler thinks that they want to visit a certain destination in this world, their mind instantly wonders if they will be safe there. Maybe it is the way of the world today, and how many people have been retrained to think that nowhere is safe anymore.

Or maybe it is the fact that every once in a while, people hear something bad happening in one area of the world and wonder if that activity will spread to where they want to go. Or it could just be that everyone hears about something bad going on and it takes them a long time to feel comfortable again and have it leave that little corner of their mind.

With that being said, those who are choosing to travel to Koh Rong often ask is Koh Rong safe? The answer to that question is yes.

Koh Rong is as safe as many of the other safest areas in the world, so no one really needs to worry too much about traveling there. However, there are a few things that everyone must be aware of when they plan to travel to these spectacular islands.

The one thing that can be a problem in Koh Rong is theft, but as many people know, theft can be experienced everywhere. That is the main reason why almost every hotel in the world provides safes in each room, as well as locks on the doors, so that every guests’ items stay safe. Now, thieves can sometimes break through those safety features, but it takes them more time, which means that they can get caught easier.

Most accommodations on Koh Rong offer safes in the rooms, while the hostels will offer lock boxes in every dorm room. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of these features instead of being swept away by the beauty of the island and the thought that nothing could possibly happen to their belongings while they are there.

It can happen, it does happen, and people should just take precautions to ensure that it doesn’t happen to them. In fact, past guests encourage travelers to bring their own padlocks to ensure that their items are locked up tight. Another excellent idea is wearing a money belt, so that money can stay with a person wherever they are instead of needing to be left behind.

While theft could be considered bad enough, there are a few hostels, hotels, and resorts on Koh Rong that have been constructed so quickly that they do not offer proper septic systems yet. While most people wouldn’t think that this could pose a problem to them, a few travelers will understand that this can be deadly.

After all the waste that should be going into a septic system needs to go somewhere, and unfortunately, some of it ends up in the sea instead. This is problematic for anyone that goes into the water to swim or participate in water sports, because that waste could end up on them and even inside them if they get water in their mouth, up their nose, and in any cuts.

Thankfully, changes are being done immediately, so this issue should no longer be a problem in the near future.

Any travelers that end up getting sick while on the islands may find themselves in rough shape until they can reach the mainland. While there is a medical facility in Koh Touch on Koh Rong, there is nothing for those people who become ill over on Koh Rong Samloem.

This is normally not an issue for those who have a mild ailment, but it can be a game changer for those who have severe food poisoning, severe heatstroke, and even major health conditions like a heart attack. There are also plenty of poisonous snakes on the island, which can cause trouble to someone who gets bit by one.

Most of the people who live and work on the island can help with most medical issues, but a few people may need to take the long ferry ride back to the mainland for assistance.

Travelers are encouraged to take their own first aid kit with them to Koh Rong, and make sure that it is stocked with all sorts of different medications, antiseptic, antibiotic ointment, band aids, and anything else that they think that they will need. While medical problems are not a safety issue per say, it is still a problem that will affect a person’s health and wellness when they are on the islands.

There have only been a couple of documented cases of people being attacked while on Koh Rong.

One was back in 2013, when a woman was killed while making the trek through the jungle to Long Beach. The other incident was in 2015, when someone attacked a tourist.

While some travelers may read about these and no longer consider Koh Rong safe, the reality is that these same situations could happen in any traveler’s neighborhood nowadays.

These are obviously rare occurrences, but travelers should always be with another person when they are wandering around the islands. It also is not always a good idea to be out late at night, unless a person is in an area with quite a few other people and everyone will be returning to their accommodations together. This usually happens with one of the bioluminescent nighttime tours, which are quite popular and worth the nighttime action.

The main thing that everyone should know before traveling to these islands is that the answer to is Koh Rong safe is yes! No one will need to take too many different precautions than they would anywhere else in the world. After all, no one should walk alone in too many places, nor should people be out wandering around in the dark.

Obviously, this is a different culture and a fairly underdeveloped area of the world. Therefore, travelers will want to only drink bottled water and use ice from a single source. However, that is common practice in many foreign countries.

The same precautions should be used with food that will be eaten. Cooked foods are usually the best, because bacteria can be cooked off. But it will depend on how the food is made.

Everyone should just use a little common sense as they enjoy their time on the islands and they will find that they will discover that they feel safe the entire time that they are there.
