How to Get to Koh Rong from Phnom Penh

Koh Rong is a massive island that has a total of four villages plus twenty-eight beaches. While this might not seem to be an issue, everyone will want to be aware that traveling to the wrong spot means paying for additional transportation to where they are supposed to be. Of course, some people also choose to travel to Koh Rong Sanloem, which is a completely different island close by.

Begin in Phnom Penh

Everyone who arrives in Phnom Penh will have quite the distance to travel before they reach Koh Rong. After all, the former is on the mainland, while the latter is an island out in the middle of the water. There are more than one hundred miles between the two as well. Due to the distance and the crossing of water, travelers must take a bus to Sihanoukville and then a ferry to reach their destination.

Take the Bus from Phnom Penh

The bus ride from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville takes between seven and eight hours, unless a traveler chooses the express option. Most people choose to board the bus later in the day, so that they can sleep the entire time that they are on the road. This allows them to arrive in Sihanoukville well-rested and more than ready for the morning ferry.

However, some people will choose to do the long bus ride during the day, so that they can see the sights outside the bus windows. This is an option, but by the time travelers arrive in Sihanoukville, the last ferry usually would have left for the day. When this happens, travelers need to be prepared with accommodations for the evening, so that they can get some sleep.

The good news is that some of the night buses are quite comfortable and have air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Travelers get free bottled water during their ride and there is a comfort room complete with bunk beds where everyone can sleep if they wish. This room is perfect for those who simply cannot sleep sitting up in a bus seat. The buses used during the day are not as plush, but they do the job and get people to where they need to be!

Travel Via Train or Minivan

Those travelers who do not want to take a bus to get to Koh Rong from Phnom Penh can choose to take a train or fly instead. They would still need to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and the travel time would be dependent on the option that they chose.

The train ride would begin at the Phnom Penh Station and it would take seven hours to reach Sihanoukville. If a traveler decided to fly, they would need to start at the Phnom Penh Airport, and it would take thirty-five minutes of flight time to reach Sihanoukville. Of course, there would be additional time in there, as everyone would need to arrive at the airport early to check in for their flight. Those considering flying will need to use either Cambodia Bayon Airlines or Air Class Líneas Aéreas, as they are the only two airlines that fly between the two destinations.

Travel Via Car

Of course, travelers can also rent their own vehicle to travel between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, but it is not as easy as the other modes of transportation. Travelers would need to be aware of where they were at all times and they would need to make sure that they could return their vehicle as soon as they reached Sihanoukville, as there is no way to take the vehicle over to Koh Rong.

Travel Via Ferry or Boat

Once everyone arrives in Sihanoukville, they can board the ferry over to Koh Rong. The island is twenty-five kilometers from the mainland and the ride takes approximately an hour. It is a little longer for the boat ride to Koh Rong Sanloem, but that ride is just as worthwhile.

There may be times when the ferry is not running and that is normally when there are not enough people to make the trip. In those instances, travelers can pay to have a speed boat take them over to either of the islands. The ride via speed boat takes approximately forty-five minutes and travelers are urged to use caution while on the boat, because it is common for waves to splash over the sides due to the speed.

Everyone needs to make sure that they get the correct ticket before they board the ferry or pay for a speed boat ride. If a person is not careful, they can pay to get off at one area of the island instead of where they are supposed to be. And since the distance between each of the four villages on the island is quite far, travelers could end up paying more than they need to in order to finally reach their destination. Therefore, it is recommended that travelers tell the ticket person where they need to go instead of guessing which ticket is the one that they need.

No one should ever let the distance, or the lengthy time of travel dissuade them from going to Koh Rong from Phnom Penh though, as the area is quite stunning. Plus, once everyone arrives, they will find that they can simply sit back and relax as they relish the tranquility that is all around them. In fact, many people choose to stay in Koh Rong longer than they originally planned, which makes the longer travel times even more tolerable.

It is going to take the same amount of time for a person to travel back to Phnom Penh from Koh Rong, but at that point, every traveler should be more than ready to sit back and relax as they watch the country pass them by.
